From Elder Lisa’s heart...
Blessings upon you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Last month, we celebrated Mother’s Day, and my fervent hope is that every mother, grandmother, great grandmother, foster mother, auntie, and substitute mother was celebrated and appreciated for everything you do in your role as nurturer, role model, and friend. God bless all of you!
Also, congratulations to all the graduates this season who are crossing the stage to receive their diplomas or acknowledging their completion of one level of education and ascent to another level. Special love and congratulations to our Legacy Ambassador, Rev. Dr. Victoria Turner, who earned her Doctorate in Education!
On Sunday, May 4, before we celebrated Holy Communion, the Lord spoke to us through a message based on Philippians 1:3-6, titled, “I Made It!” an appropriate message for this graduation season. In this passage, Paul writes the church at Phillipi to thank them for their unwavering faithfulness and active participation in support of him while imprisoned. He encouraged the church to continue their work in spreading the gospel, confident in God, to be bold in their witness, and secure in the knowledge that God is with them all the way until the day Jesus returns, and they can say, “I made it.” This is exactly what we as followers of Christ must do. We must remember what Jesus has done for us, that we have made it only because of His grace and mercy, and that He will complete the work He has started in us until the day He returns.
On Friday, May 16, a deadly tornado blew through the City of St. Louis damaging an estimation of 5,000 buildings. Many residents lost their homes and a few residents lost their lives. One moment the skies were clear, and the sun was shining, and a moment later, the skies were dark and filled with threatening storm clouds. No one was ready for what happened next. There were no sirens to give a warning.
An EF3 tornado with 165 miles per hour winds tore through the city, uprooting trees, bringing down power lines, demolishing homes, and ending several lives. Cleaning up the city and restoring power is going to take some time, and we are praying for those whose homes were destroyed and who lost loved ones.
In the Spirit of God the warning signals are before us. God took this moment to remind all of us to get ready now because we may not have time to get ready later. In this moment, the Lord gave us a message titled “Ready or Not” based on Genesis 6:9-14, 22 (NIV). God was grieving His creation because of their wickedness and decided to destroy all humanity, with one exception. In this passage, with its focus on Noah, God found Noah to be the only one of His creation who was righteous and “ready,” the Bible informs us “Noah did everything God commanded.” The question for you, are you READY to do everything as God commands? Why did God pick Noah, could it be the reason God picked you...to SURVIVE and MULTIPLY.
God wants us to be READY! To be ready, we must make our relationship with God our priority, take the time to understand and keep our covenant with God, meditate on His word day and night, and share our faith with our friends and family. Like Noah, you may be the reason your family and friends SURVIVE. Furthermore, we must be willing to use and multiply our godly gifts, and be good stewards by willingly serving with our resources and our hands. Noah was ready, I ask you, “Are you READY, or not?”
